The world emits around 50 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases each year [measured in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2eq)]. ‌Corporates find it hard to generate solutions and transform their business for deep decarbonization. As current technologies are not sufficient to reduce this amount of emissions there is a need for Innovation as critical enabler for sustainable and decarbonized operations across many industries.

‌Three Innovations are currently very prominent in the decarbonization discussion:

  1. Carbon capture and storage (CCS):
    To reduce carbon in value chains a mix of different technologies is required. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is one of them. As the current cost of this technology are yet too high for mass scaling, there is a need to drive strong efforts to reduce the cost. Innovation-enabled cost reductions like the ones achieved for solar, wind and batteries for electric vehicles, can lead to a breakthrough. However, it is also important to think about rebound effects and the avoidance of emissions in the first place is always the best strategy.
  2. Circular economy approaches to drive material efficiency:
    Closing material loops and can drive a strong increase in material efficiency along value chain in all sectors. Concepts like product life extension, recycling and extraction of secondary raw materials with high quality are very promising.‌ The effects will not only be in lower carbon footprints, but also in strategic independence for critical raw materials.‌
  3. Tackling Scope 3 emissions:
    As Scope 1 & 2 emissions have been on the agenda for several years, companies are now getting serious in tackling upstream/downstream emissions (Scope 3). Companies are grappling with the intricacies of Scope 3: Data accuracy, Engagement across the value chain, and the need to support suppliers along the way .‌The measuring and controlling of Scope 3 emissions involves tracking activities across the entire value chain – from suppliers to end users. Implementing robust supplier engagement initiatives fosters collaboration and encourages suppliers to adopt sustainable practices. This involves setting clear expectations, providing support, and incentivising suppliers to align with environmental objectives.‌
